Although everyone has self-sabotaging thoughts running about their heads from time to time, people with ADHD negatively self-talk more frequently than neurotypicals. We more often have destructive feelings of failure, self-blame, and that we are incapable.
However, when we look at the link between entrepreneurs and ADHD, there is a clear correlation – more people with ADHD take on new business ventures than those without it. This trend is not coincidental, and people with ADHD have several great traits for running profitable businesses. These entrepreneurs are hugely successful business owners, and you can be too. But the negative self-talk needs to stop.
Follow these tips and see if you can stop the self-destructive thoughts in your head, allowing you to focus on the positives of having ADHD and allowing it to see your business succeed.
1 – Observe & Challenge All Negative Thoughts
Although it may seem counterintuitive, negative self-talk shouldn’t be ignored. Instead, observe and notice exactly what you are feeling negative about. With negative self-talk, our thoughts are often untrue or at least exaggerated. By observing your thoughts you can think them through rationally. Challenge them and question them each time they come to mind, and you’ll be surprised how often you can convince your negative opinion that it’s wrong.
2 – Keep a Journal
Every time you have a negative thought, it is also a good idea to write it down in a journal. This will help you figure out if there is a particular toxic relationship or task at work that is triggering this negative self-talk frequently. If it is linked to a specific task, try delegating this for someone else to do. If it is because of a particular relationship, cut ties if possible or spend time working out how the relationship can be improved.
3 – Focus on Growing Your Strengths
Whereas your weaknesses may be what is getting you down, don’t spend all your energy trying to correct these “faults.” Instead, focus on growing your strengths and surround yourself in a working environment that matches these. This will give you greater feelings of satisfaction each day and will help curb negative self-talk. It will help you remember the positives and what amazing qualities you do have, rather than what you’re lacking.
4 – Don’t Wait Until Tomorrow
People with ADHD are inherently great at procrastinating, which is not a good trait to have in business. This is often one of the negative thoughts that circulate in the heads of people with ADHD – “Why didn’t I start that task today?” and “I should have been doing that!” So, no matter how big or small the step you take towards achieving your goals, make sure you work towards them a little each day and try not to put things off until tomorrow.
